The Reason this DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

This decision from the DNC to block the publication of its internal post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election appears shocking yet entirely predictable. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building grassroots capacities capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has continued under the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Publishing an official autopsy would have indicated whether the leadership actually want to foster public discourse about the strategic failures which allowed Donald Trump to return to the White House. However, the committee is acting as if there are no lessons to glean from the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

Our guiding principle: does this help us win? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.

Key Issues an Analysis Might Have Addressed

A genuine analysis worth its salt would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Alienation: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive during the tight recent race.
  • The Choice to Seek Re-election: The determined insistence of a party leader to stay in the race, and an extremely delayed exit, is seen by some as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
  • Failing Everyday Americans: While facing rising costs, the campaign is criticized for accommodating powerful financial backers and not managing to challenge the impact of big business.
  • A Gaza Impact: An unwillingness to reconsider a policy position regarding a ongoing war is cited as driving away many voters, particularly with youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Support: Research demonstrates a major drop-off of support for the party from the youth electorate.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal fits a longstanding habit of evading hard truths. This mirrors a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's determination to seeking another term right up until a disastrous public debate performance led to a reversal.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing pollsters of their opposition to the incumbent to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Concerns

An honest autopsy might also examine questions regarding where money went, such as the amounts were directed to high-priced advisors and media firms over the course of an electoral effort which expended an enormous amount in a short period.

A Broader Problem

At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a submission toward party leaders responsible for a losing presidential campaign. The signal for ordinary supporters – including millions of dedicated activists – appears to be that they cannot have a right to understand what the leadership have learned from an analysis compiled from extensive interviews.

A party unable to honestly assess its mistakes is unlikely to break free from the pattern that proved so advantageous to their opponents.
